Caroline Mary Purcell

Irene’s Paternal Grandmother

Birth : 5 February 1813 (or possibly 1810) in Birmingham, England

Death : 13 September 1889 (aged 76 or 79) in Gundaroo, NSW, Burial : Gundaroo Catholic Pioneer Cemetery, Gundaroo, NSW

Mother : Hannah Farrington

Father : John Purcell

Partner(s) : John Casey (M: 4 February 1833 at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney)

Children : William John (1833-1903), Mary Caroline (1835-1910), Thomas (1837-1917), Joseph Andrew (1838-1915), James (1839-1883), Elizabeth Mary (1841-1931), Mark (1847-1926), Michael James (1848-1939)

Note that William John may have been born in 1831, as the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has a ‘William Casey’ with parents John and Caroline being born in both 1831 and 1833. But if he was born in 1831 it appears that he was christened in St Luke’s Church of England, Liverpool which seems unlikely since both John and Caroline were Catholics. It would also mean William was born before his parents were married, which again seems unlikely.

This site confirmed Caroline’s birth date and that she was buried at the Gundaroo Catholic Pioneer Cemetery at Gundaroo, where her husband is buried, although I’m yet to find her mentioned in records for that cemetery.
