30 Years at Qantas

On 16 November 1920, two pioneering Australian aviators and veterans of WWI, Hudson Fysh and Paul McGinness, stood in a dusty paddock in outback Queensland and launched a little airline they called Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service.

One hundred years later in 2020, Qantas had evolved to become the longest continuously operating airline in the world.

On Tuesday 9 November 1993, a week before the airline’s 73rd anniversary, Darryl Brown, third child of Joan (nee O’Brien) and Keith Brown, started work in Information Technology with Qantas.

Thirty years later on 9 November 2023, Darryl posted this message on Facebook to celebrate his 30th anniversary with Qantas. Given that most people nowadays change jobs every 2 years and 9 months, this is a mighty achievement. and deserves recognition on the family website.

30 years ago today, I started work with Qantas IT. I know the Flying Kangaroo is working through some issues at the moment, but join me in looking back and celebrating my 30 years:

19 years of service, a redundancy, then back to Qantas a year later

2½ years for my family and I in London, part of the Qantas team on a project with British Airways

Created IT systems for, and learnt about, so many areas of the business

20+ years volunteering on the Promotional Team, with amazing people who are now lifelong friends. We shared so many 'money can't buy' experiences!

And lots of (standby) travel, with the odd upgrade

And here’s a gallery of just a few of Darryl’s Qantas experiences. I’m sure he has many more which he may like to share – perhaps he could even give us some gossip on Alan Joyce. 😁
